offenders still reside at mission
Despite sweep last fall,
mission still houses seven
Registered sex offenders released from the Illinois
Department of Corrections have officially taken
up residence at the Pacific Garden Mission, 646
S. State St., despite a law that prohibits them
living near a school, according to police officials.
Offenders residing at the homeless shelter violate
a 1998 amendment to the Sex Offender Registration
Act, which makes it unlawful for a sex offender
to live within 1,000 feet of a school, child-care
facility or day-care center.

Nearly 500 members of Hotel Employees and Restaurant
Employees Union Local 1 and supporters protested
in a rally in front of the Congress Plaza Hotel,
520 S. Michigan Ave., on May 19.
The hotel employees have been working without
a contract since January 1.
